talispun
The City of Battles is the only member of the Eastlands Alliance that still permits public battle for sport, a tradition brought to the Eastlands by the Jeshir Empire during their colonization of the eastern continent. While the rest of the allied nations rejected the brutality of the coliseum blood sport, the descendants of Talis reveled in it. Thought the Eastlands Alliance only permits Talispun a certain number of actual death battles per year, much of the Talisian culture revolves around battle and the pomp of the arena, which hosts staged combat, theatrical productions, magical displays, monsters taming, and more. Anything that appears to bring a profit winds up involved or affiliated with the Arena. Talispun is also a thriving port city equidistance from Jeshir and most of the other city-states where any pleasure or exotic good can be purchased for the right price.
The governing body within the city if the House of Lord, a corrupt body of nobles into which anyone can buy membership if they are sponsored by another member and have enough coin or clout to gain prominence. Seats within the House of Lords are hereditary and once a member of the family is titled, noble status is granted to their entire immediate family. While the vast majority of the seats in the House have been granted to men, there is no stricture against elevating women to the assembly, and several powerful women of note have gained entry to the austere congress. The head of the House of Lords is known as the “High Lord”, and he oversee disputes between other members of the assembly, and he has the power to promote a noble family or strip them of their noble status, so his favor is highly sought after. Battles between the upper echelons are common, but Talispun is also home to a number of criminal organizations that wage war upon one another in the very streets, such as the Crimson Blades and the Fang’s Venom. With so many dangerous elements, Talispun’s danger is only exceeded by its wealth and opportunity to profit.
