harmony vale

Nestled into a valley enclosed by small mountains on all sides in the very southernmost point of the Eastlands, Harmony Vale is a secluded farming community that has enjoyed many centuries of peace unfettered by the politics of the other city-states. Even during the Imperial War, the vale saw little interference from Jeshinese forces who found traversing the narrow cliffs into the valley not to be worth the effort. The towns of the vale are populated by families that have lived there for generations and who hold little love for outsiders, who always seem to bring trouble with them by poking their noses where they don’t belong. Harmony Vale continues to occasionally attract scholars and other strange types owing to the fact that it dotted the whole valley over by ruins of gigantic proportions. Very few people realize the source of these ruins, assuming that they belonged to the tribes of giants known to live in the mountains. What is less known is that the ruins are the only sign that the valley was once occupied by a mythic figure from Aeinia’s past, the legendary Dragon Queen whose city was nestled into the valley until it was destroyed by some unknown conflict. As most draconic legends place the Dragon Queen’s final stand in the kingdom of Bloodstone Keep in the Jeshir Empire, scholars have never given the evidence as much attention.

Legends say that the Dragon Queen sleeps beneath the earth in the ruins of her city with part of her army, having long ago rejected the world for its depravity and bloodshed. These legends are told across Harmony Vale, although they are not widely believed by many, even the elves who dwell within the valley have no tales or cultural memory to corroborate such a story. There are other tales that say some day the Dragons’ city will rise again to swallow up the entire valley, but until that time, the folk of Harmony Vale are more than content to grow their potatoes and corn seeking only the occasional help of the druids who wander the valley from village to village, homestead to homestead, looking after the simple folk. Given the simple nature of life in Harmony Vale and the lush fertile soil, more than one would-be conqueror has set their sights upon the valley only to find that the people’s stubbornness is a match for whatever force of arms they might bring to bear. Valemen refuse to bow to those outside their own communities, regardless of the cost, and they have been known to spit right in the eye of certain death. Some folk say it’s because they have the old blood of those who served the dragons, but no matter the source, the people only answer to their Village Elders and to the Council of Elders as a whole, which only finds occasion to meet once a year. For the most part, the farmers and herdsman of the vale are content to be left alone to care for their families and one another.
