halter's edge
Most of the Eastern city-states of the Eastlands import a vast amount of lumber from the woodland city-state on the very of the great Sea of Trees fittingly named “Halter’s Edge”. The northern part of the Middlewood has a reputation for being haunted and wandered by mysterious witches, but it is said that the superstitious folk who live on the edge of that eldritch realm know how to navigate the spirits of the woods and take from the bounty of the land without angering its protectors. Halter’s Edge is a series of logging and farming communities that make their living from the Middlewood in one way or another as lumberjacks, farmers, foresters, herbalists, trappers, hunters, and guides. Since the magical disaster known as “The Flux”, the woods have become ever more dangerous, and whispers abound among the communities of the Edge that the spirits of the past have grown restless within the wood. While the woods have grown more wild, the stubborn, resilient people of the Edge have maintained their home and redoubled their caution, including consulting with the local witch covens.
Halter’d Edge is home to several different witch covens, including the Eldaren, a coven of masked witches who claim authority over the craft by ancient bloodline. The coven actually maintains a well-known temple grove called “Gleaan Draíocht” or simply “The Witch’s Grove” where the witches maintain a presence and can be contacted by even the humblest of folk seeking aid or the occasional potion. Halter’s Edge is governed by a Sheriff and a Village Council made up of the mayors of each one of the communities, but it is widely understood that these governing bodies are only to manage the affairs of mortalkind in their doings. The Sheriff and Councilmen all understand that the land they inhabit belongs to the witches and the ghosts of the woods first and to the people second. Those who trespass against the witches or the wood soon find their families cursed.
